Volkswagen Wheel Bearing

Your Volkswagen's wheel bearings function like all typical bearing found in machines elsewhere, from those for recreational use such as inline skates to heavy-duty, industrial motors. The wheels spin smoothly and quietly, thanks to the wheel bearings. Without them, your Volkswagen's wheels would soon wear out faster than expected, leaving you wheelless and your billfold empty.

The wheel bearings also support your Volkswagen's weight. We can only imagine how small an object could actually support such a large vehicle. Wheel bearings can support up to 6,000 pounds of vehicle weight. To do both jobs, your Volkswagen wheel bearings should be in proper condition. In a typical sedan, each bearing would support up to 850 pounds of weight. Though wheel bearings are engineered to last up to 150,000 miles of driving, the constant wear and tear of driving takes a toll on your Volkswagen wheel bearings. The seals might crack, the grease may leak and dirt may accumulate inside the wheel bearing cavity, eroding the wheel bearing inside. Most wheel bearing assemblies are sealed; the seals cannot be replaced separately. If a seal has failed, the entire hub assembly must be replaced as soon as possible. On older vehicles, they have serviceable wheel bearing assemblies. A bad seal can be replaced to extend the life of the bearings.

If you drive your Volkswagen in hub-deep water or cross a flooded street, you should have your wheel bearings checked immediately. Water causes rust in the wheel bearings and contaminates the grease. Most wheel bearing seals are not designed to keep the water out. The wheel bearings should be cleaned, inspected and repacked with fresh grease. The first sign of wheel bearing trouble/failure is noise. A rumbling, growling, or even a cyclic noise from any point in the wheel should be taken as a sign that the wheel bearings need attention, fast. An ignored noise may cause the wheel to come off in the long run. The noise is proportional to the vehicle's speed; it increases when you are accelerating, and changes when coasting along or slowing down, turning, or become louder or even disappear at certain speeds. Another indication of wheel bearing is play. Too much of it can cause steer wandering (this can be mistaken for worn steering components or the need to have the wheels aligned). To check, the wheels should be grasped in the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. Slightly rock or rotate the wheels. If there's a play, a noise or roughness, they are indications that your Volkswagen wheel bearings need a change. If a bearing fails, then pay attention also to the other hubs, the wheel bearings there may also need to be changed.

Changing the wheel bearing/s can be easy. Just a few simple steps and you can change your Volkswagen's wheel bearings in a snap. In most cases you will need to remove your disc brake calipers and caliper bridge to remove the rotor.

  • First, remove the press-fit bearing cap. Grab it with your Channelocks and work it back and forth until it pops off. Be careful not to crush it as you remove it.
  • Once the cap is off you will see a cotter pin. Remove the cotter pin and the retainer ring. If your vehicle has a castellated nut, you will not have a retaining ring.
  • Using your Channelocks or adjustable wrench, remove the nut from the spindle.
  • Now remove the outer wheel bearing and washer and lay it aside.
  • Slide the rotor or drum off the spindle. This may be difficult, but it will come off. Don't worry about hurting the grease seal; we're going to replace it anyway.
  • Now that the rotor or drum is off, use a suitable tool to remove the grease seal and take out the inner wheel bearing.
  • Using a rag, wipe all the old grease from inside the hub.
  • Now we need to remove the bearing races from the hub. Most hubs have gaps in them to expose the back of the race to make removal easier. Tap the race out, alternating from side to side so it comes out evenly and doesn't get cocked in the hub. Once it's out, flip the rotor or drum over and do the same for the other race.

When both races are out, clean the inside of the hub with a rag. Also make sure the spindle is clean as well. You can even use some carburetor cleaner to do a really good job of cleaning. From this point on cleanliness is important. You do not want any dirt, sand or metal chips inside the hub.
