Volkswagen Water Pump

Keep your Cool with the Volkswagen Water Pump

You experience losing your cool during stressful times. This often gives you problems emotionally and physically. But we must admit that there are occurrences that it is really unavoidable. But as far as we are concerned, one must always maintain a cool head, no matter how hard it is. The same is true with your Volkswagen car. It's your every day helper in getting you to places you need to go to so it's just as stressed out as you are. How does your car keep its cool in order to prevent engine overheating and damage? Your car does this with the aid of a water pump.

The water pump is a centrifugal pump driven by a belt connected to the crankshaft of the engine. Its main purpose is to circulate coolant form the radiator, through the engine, and back to the radiator. The water pump has a shaft with a pulley on one end and a pump rotor on the other end. The water pump's shaft and drive pulley are supported by a bearing located just in front of the seal. The rotor starts to circulate the coolant, when the pulley is spun by a belt. So in other words, it is driven by a belt that is a timing belt, a serpentine belt or a V-belt. The main reason that it is driven by a belt is to save space and the kind of belt basically depends on what the engine your car is using.

What could go wrong with your Volkswagen car's water pump? One could be a leakage. This happens when you notice a puddle of orange, red or green fluid under the front of the engine and a declining level in the radiator overflow container. The source of a leakage could be a seal failure that is supposed to keep the coolant in. Another water pump problem could be a bearing failure. This happens when there is excessive belt tension, normal long-term wear or seal failure that results to a noisy and loose bearing.

It is advisable to replace the water pump of your Volkswagen every 90, 000, miles or 100,000 miles at the most to prevent engine overheating and serious damage, which could cost you far more than what a water pump could cost you.
