Signaling a Volkswagen turn

With the thousands of parts that comprise a Volkswagen, sometimes we are left to wonder, “What does this part do compared to other parts?” The question applies to not a few ostensibly unimportant parts, that if we were to think, performs an unexalted task.

One of these parts is your Volkswagen's turn signal. Turn signals (properly called “directional indicators” or “directional signals”, sometimes “indicators”, “directionals”, “blinkers” or “flashers”) are signal lights mounted near the left, right front and rear corners of your Volkswagen. The Volkswagen turn signal tells the other drivers that car is going to change lane or turn in an intersection. Turn signals were devised as early as 1907, but only became widespread only after 1939.

Today, turn signals are required in all vehicles driven on public roadways. In the early days of automobiles, hand signals were used. From the 1920s to the 1950s, vehicles mounted retractable mechanical arms called trafficators for indicating turns instead of flashing lights. These early turn signals were placed high behind the front doors and swung out horizontally. But trafficators were so fragile that they easily broke off and had a tendency to stick to the closed position.

As with all vehicle lighting and signaling devices, your Volkswagen turn signal must comply with technical standards of the minimum and maximum permissible intensity levels and minimum horizontal and vertical angles of visibility. Otherwise, having this signaling device would be worthless.

Having a defective Volkswagen turn signal is a damper, especially when driving on the freeway. A ticket by the highway patrol is not worth your time and money. Accidents have been known to happen just because of a defective turn signal, just because the driver behind did not see one flash. Protect yourself and your loved ones. Having a faulty turn signal is not worth your life.
