Volkswagen Timing Chain

Volkswagen timing chains for a synchronized valve train

Your Volkswagen's engine performance should be a priority and prioritizing it means maintaining an excellent valve train. A precisely synchronized valve train is one of the most critical factors in a gasoline engine that help reduce harmful pollutants and maintain proper combustion. This could be ensured by the proper functioning of the timing chain.

The timing chain synchronizes the camshaft to the crankshaft position, so the valves will open and close at a proper time in relation to the position of the pistons. The camshaft rotates once for every two rotations on the crankshaft. The timing chain must maintain accurate functioning over a wide range of speeds, accelerations, and temperatures to ensure that the Volkswagen has proper valve positioning for intake and exhaust charges.

While timing chains can be noisy and more expensive, they are also more durable than timing belts. The Volkswagen timing chains are less frequently changed compared to belts. And, nowadays, timing chains are being made with the finest materials and processes for higher reliability and lesser noise. But what happens if the timing chain does break? Simply put, a broken timing chain can cause an engine to stop running or cause the valves to crash to the pistons. When it breaks, the camshaft no longer turns, which means the valves are going to be stuck in that position. However, the crankshaft continues to turn, which means the pistons hit the valves and may punch holes in the piston crowns. If the chain breaks and is not replaced immediately, it will cause serious engine damage.

However, there a few indicators that can warn you if your timing chain is already worn out. Even though it's not that noticeable, a rough idle could be the result of a worn timing chain. Sluggish performance and poor fuel consumption are also an indication of a defective timing chain. There's even the chance that your engine will stop running completely.

Your Volkswagen timing chain should be changed every 120,000 miles of ground covered. So, it's either you maintain your Volkswagen timing chain or prepare for a huge bill in damaged engine repair. What would you choose?
