Volkswagen Timing Belt

Volkswagen Timing Belt for Proper Timing and Engine Performance

Your Volkswagen car may be one of your most precious possessions not only because it is one of the car brands with the most number of followers around the world but because you earned it with your blood and sweat. And if it's possible, you want to have it for the rest of your life. The good news is, this dream is absolutely possible, provided you give it the best maintenance. Take for instance the maintenance of your engine by replacing your Volkswagen timing belt at the required time before any damage can occur.

Timing belts were first used in 1945. It was the mass produced-German Goggomobil micro car that was first to use timing belts while the first American vehicle to use one was the 1966 Pontiac Tempest. Why timing belts? Aside from timing belts, there are gears and chains. However, aside form being more expensive, these are noisier in operation and are not that flexible, therefore constraining the relative location of the crankshaft and the camshaft. The main purpose of the timing belt is to turn the camshaft at exactly half the speed of the crankshaft while maintaining a precise alignment. The camshaft causes the intake and exhaust valves to open and close in time with the pistons which move up and down in the cylinders. In order for the engine to run properly, the valves must open and close at exactly the right time in relationship to the piston movement.

Timing belts are used by two types of engines namely the interference engine and the non-interference engine, which difference form each other lies between the proximity of the valves and the pistons. In the case of the interference engine, if the timing belt slips even one notch, the piston can crash into an open valve causing serious engine damage by bending valves and breaking pistons. Non-interference engines on the other hand, do not usually self destruct, but if the belt fails, the engine will no longer function causing your car to shut down immediately.

Timing belts are usually made up of rubber with high-tensile fibers running the length of the belt and since rubber degrades with higher temperatures and with contact with motor oil and antifreeze, timing belts are more prone to damage in hot and leaky engines.

The main thing about timing belts is that there's no warning before they are damaged. The other thing is that they are hard to inspect. It is therefore recommended that you should replace your Volkswagen timing belt every 75,000 miles to every 95,000 miles. Only one thing is for sure - a defective timing belt will leave you stranded. Replacing your Volkswagen timing belt may not be that cheap but then again, compared to the cost and the headache an extensive engine damage could cause you, it will probably all worth it.
