Volkswagen Tie Rods

The Volkswagen Tie Rods

The steering system of your Volkswagen allows you to maintain control of your vehicle even when driving in extreme conditions. If your Volkswagen is not giving you the kind of steering response you have previously enjoyed, giving you a hard time around corners and curves, perhaps it's about time you check the condition of the Volkswagen tie rods.

This sturdy component of your car's steering system is among the first of the front-end components to bear the brunt of the road shocks and heavy vibrations. While it rarely needs maintenance, it will gradually succumb to wear and will eventually have to be replaced.

The Volkswagen tie rod is integral to the car's steering, conveying the force that makes the wheels turn left or right. In a standard mechanical steering system, two inner tie rods are attached to the center link and two outer tie rods connect to the steering knuckles. When you turn the steering wheel, the tie rod transmits the force from the center link to the steering knuckle which directs the course the tires take.

An adjustment sleeve joins the inner and outer tie rods, reconciling any alignments in the front wheel. In a rack and pinion steering system, the Volkswagen tie rods connect the rack and pinion unit to the spindle attached to each wheel, using the side to side motion from the unit to make the wheels turn.

There is a good chance that your Volkswagen tie rods have become worn or loose when you put extra effort in cranking the steering wheel and when you hear popping sounds when you do so. Symptoms of a defective tie rod also include loose steering and wobbly driving, causing your tires to deteriorate rapidly. A worn tie rod is potentially dangerous because you lose steering control when it snaps. Thus, always make sure that the Volkswagen tie rod connections are tight and in good order.
