The Volkswagen Struts

A suspension system for your Volkswagen wouldn't be necessary if all the roads are smooth and flat, but this is not the case. Even newly paved roads have irregularities which interact with the car wheels and directly affect driving comfort.

When the wheels encounter an obstruction, its forward velocity is forced upwards. The car loses contact with the ground for a brief moment and then slams back down, jolting not only the passengers inside but the car's internal components as well. This contributes to the daily wear and tear of car parts and can be costly in the long run. To neutralize most road vibrations and cushion the passenger cabin from the impact of large potholes and bumpy roads, a suspension system was put in place and the Volkswagen struts form the core of this system.

The Volkswagen strut, also known as MacPherson strut, is the most widely used front suspension mechanism in Volkswagen cars today because of its light and compact design. The Volkswagen strut combines several suspension parts such as the shock absorber, strut bearing, and steering knuckle into one housing and mounts it inside a coil spring. The coil spring absorbs the energy from the bump by compressing and expanding, supporting the vehicle's weight. Without the shock absorber, the spring will continue to bounce until it has used up its energy. To prevent a bouncy ride, the shock absorber transforms the coil's energy into heat. This dampens the shock and reduces the number of bounces to create a smooth and controlled ride.

Since it always subjected to the shock caused by rough roads, the Volkswagen struts will fail in time. Excessive bouncing, rocking from side to side and front to back, and nose-diving when braking are signs that point to a damaged strut. Annual check ups for your Volkswagen struts can correct lagging suspension and keep the suspension system performing to par.
