Steady as the Volkswagen Strut Mount

They wouldn’t call it “negotiating curves” if it were as easy as driving on a straight lane. Among other things, the Volkswagen chassis is subjected to longitudinal compression every time that it hug curves. Supposedly, the car is at risk of rolling sideways when it corners.

Resisting the force of this longitudinal compression, the Volkswagen chassis relies on its strut assemblies to maintain road bearing. Called dampers, the strut assembly supports sideway loads. It works pretty much like a “passive” shock absorber. But, instead of absorbing the force, it transmits the resulting rigidity away from the axis of compression. Volkswagen struts are ordinarily installed across the chassis and at the heart of the drive train, where it is in the most effective position to function as chassis frame. These struts sport rugged designs and can be used to improve on the upper suspension arms of the Volkswagen.

Due to the pressure that the strut assembly must absorb away from the chassis, they are held firmly by similarly heavy-duty rubber strut mounts. The Volkswagen strut mounts serve as pivot point for the strut assembly. For improved absorption of longitudinal compression, struts are lubricated at either ends. In most cases, Volkswagen compacts are equipped with a MacPherson type of struts. To complement this assembly, strut mounts are fitted with strut bearing in the center to give the strut mobility for steering.

As the strut transmits force, the Volkswagen strut mounts keep the assembly still. If a metallic under-chassis noise can be heard every time the Volkswagen turns, it is a sign that the strut assembly has become loose on the strut mounts. Hard steering is another indication that the strut assembly may not be in a good condition to spare the chassis from compression.

As the strut assembly resists this force from the drive train and supports the Volkswagen’s sideways load, strut mounts can loose grip of a strut quickly. With the struts’ heavy load and the regular pounding that it receives, it is critical that loose strut mounts are immediately addressed to ensure safe driving.
