Volkswagen Radiator

Volkswagen Radiator: Failsafe to Engine Meltdown

An important part of the Volkswagen cooling system is the Volkswagen radiator, which keeps the engine within the normal operating temperature range.

When the Volkswagen engine is started, the process of a controlled explosion inside the engine begins. This combustion emits so much heat that a cooling system is necessary to prevent the metal parts from melting. When an engine overheats for a long time, underhood car parts get warped by the heat and that is likely to spell the end for your engine. The Volkswagen radiator is a heat exchanger and what it does is circulate coolant throughout the engine to remove excess heat.

A Volkswagen radiator is a stand-alone aluminum contraption fitted with fins, called turbolators, welded inside parallel tubes. The coolant enters the radiator through a hose and flows down the tubes. Without the fins, only the fluid touching the tubes will cool down. The fins create turbulence so that the cooling effect will be evenly distributed throughout the coolant. When the coolant reaches the bottom of the radiator, a water pump forces it to circulate again to the engine block. The Volkswagen radiator is mounted behind the car's grill to take advantage of the incoming air. The radiator uses the air, supplemented by a nearby fan, to dissipate the heat from the coolant.

With proper maintenance, the Volkswagen radiator can last a good 150,000 miles. Regularly replenish the radiator and monitor heating through your car's temperature gauges. To prevent overheating, routinely inspect your Volkswagen radiator. Leaking coolant is a sign your radiator is not performing up to par.

Replacing your radiator rather than waiting for it to crumble is always better; you run the risk of incurring engine damage when using a worn-out radiator.
