Volkswagen Radiator Hose

Volkswagen Radiator Hose Maintenance

Maintenance Volkswagen parts are prone to wear out through overuse. In most cases, these parts are indispensable and they will have to be replaced immediately. The Volkswagen radiator hose is one of the more important parts that require regular maintenance. Directing coolant flow between the engine and the radiator, the Volkswagen radiator hose forms the backbone of the Volkswagen cooling system.

Most Volkswagen cars today carry molded radiator hose designs made of a highly flexible rubber compound. On account of the heated coolant from the engine that it circulates, and the hot underhood condition, the Volkswagen radiator hose takes pains to withstand high heat. Continuous contact with hot fluids causes the hose to get hard and brittle. Over time, coolant can leak out of the brittle portion of the radiator hose.

Routine inspection of your Volkswagen radiator hose can prevent leaks from happening. Lift and open your car's hood. You will find the radiator at the front, directly behind the Volkswagen grill. There will be two radiator hoses. The first one is located on top of the radiator. This is the hose that delivers hot coolant to be cooled by the radiator and is more prone to leaks. The second radiator hose is located on the bottom of the radiator. This hose flows the cooled coolant back to the engine block.

Run your hand along each hose. They should not be brittle, overly soft, or swollen. Give each hose a good squeeze. If cracks show or new cracks are formed, it is a good time to replace your Volkswagen radiator hose. If coolant is already leaking, determine first the source of the leak before replacing the hose. You can do this by looking for wet spots on the hose surface. If you do not find any, check the clamp holding at the end of each hose and if the leak is coming from there, a loose clamp may be causing the leak. Get a screwdriver and tighten the clamp holding.

Little things like radiator hose inspection can prevent overheating your car on the road. Keep in mind that the rubber radiator hose works in a harsh underhood condition. Like other maintenance parts, a radiator hose needs to be regularly inspected, and replaced at the first sign of coolant leak, if the cooling system is to keep up with the Volkswagen.
