Volkswagen Radiator Fan

From hot to cool: The Volkswagen radiator fan

Cars today offer such driving comfort that you hardly notice engine heat, even when the air conditioning is turned off. You almost forget that your Volkswagen, or any car for that matter, runs on fuel combustion which generates so much heat. This is made possible by the car's cooling system, which conducts heat away from the engine to prevent engine meltdown.

An integral part of the Volkswagen cooling system is the radiator. It cools down the coolant and water mixture circulating in the engine block to absorb the excess heat. When your car is moving forward, air enters the grill and passes through the radiator, cooling down the radiator tubes heated by the hot coolant flowing inside. This heat exchange is what makes the coolant mixture cool again. But what about when the car is not moving or just moving slowly and there isn't much air going in?

Tasked to cool down the radiator, the Volkswagen radiator fan is a failsafe to engine overheating. Mounted behind the radiator, Volkswagen radiator fans are billeted to protect the blades and direct the airflow. The fan supplies constant airflow to the radiator and aids in the cooling process.

To maintain the ideal range of engine temperature, sensors tell the Volkswagen radiator fan when to start and when to stop. When you turn your air conditioning on, the fan will automatically start because the A/C condenser has to be cooled also. You can tell that the Volkswagen radiator fan has stopped working when the gauge records a rise in engine temperature every time you come to a stop.

You can replace the factory-installed Volkswagen radiator fan with a high velocity fan if you want to improve the efficiency of the cooling system. These performance fans generate stronger airflow and dissipate hot air considerably faster, resulting in better engine performance.
