Volkswagen Ignition Coil

How Ignition Coil Can add Spark to Your Volkswagen's Performance

The idea behind the creation of the first Volkswagen car started in 1833 at the Berlin Motor Show when Adolf Hitler announced his plan to produce a small car for citizens of Germany. Ferdinand Porsche, upon learning of this plan immediately set-up a meeting with Hitler and discussed the particulars of this project. Volkswagen means people's car which was the whole idea why it was built in the first place.

Throughout the years, Volkswagen has had a long and rich history of car-making. And today, after such hard work and determination, it is now the number one car company in Europe. A Volkswagen car gives you all the good reasons in getting value for your money. And getting value means getting the best performance. The question is, how do you make this last? Simple. All it takes is proper maintenance. Take for instance your Volkswagen ignition coil.

An ignition coil is an induction coil in the ignition system of your car. Its role is to multiply battery voltage into ignition voltage. To be specific, it takes 12 to 16 volts stored in the battery and transforms it into 12, 000, 20, 000 or even 40, 000-plus or whatever is necessary volts needed to spark the spark plugs. Each ignition coil has a switching device located in the coil primary circuit that times with the rotation of the crankshaft. Today, this switching device is a power transistor located in the ignition control module (ICM) or in the power train control module (PCM).

What are usually the symptoms of a coil failure? First, your Volkswagen car might exhibit a temperature or humidity-related starting or stalling trouble. Second, a cranking, a no-spark condition or a severe engine backfire might also be a symptom. But what causes coil ignition failures? A neglected ignition system is the most common cause of ignition failures. This includes worn spark plugs and open-circuit spark plugs that force the ignition coils to operate at the maximum rate to produce maximum output.

When do you need to replace your Volkswagen ignition coils? There are several signs that will help you decide to finally replace your ignition coils. First is when the ICM overheats and eventually fails. Second is when the spark plug wires fail and you refuse to replace it immediately. Third is when an ignition coil is burned, cracked, severely discolored or corroded from acids or other chemicals. And last but not the least, when there's a temperature-related problem in the ignition system performance. It is therefore best to have your Volkswagen ignition coils routinely checked and quickly replaced if it has gone bad so as to prevent further ignition system damage.
