Volkswagen Heater Core

Volkswagen heater core heats you up, cools engine down

Despite advances in fuel combustion technology, your car's engine is still inefficient in converting high-energy fuel into power. During combustion, only 30% of the fuel and air mixture is converted into power, while the rest is given off as heat. To prevent your Volkswagen engine from overheating, a pump flows a coolant mixture into the engine block to conduct the heat away. Most of the heated coolant is directed to the car's radiator to be cooled down, but some of it is sometimes flowed into the Volkswagen heater core.

When it's cold outside, you turn on the heater on the control panel to warm the cabin. What really happens is you allow the hot coolant from your engine to enter the Volkswagen heater core, which is mounted just under your dashboard. The coolant enters the heater core inlet, winds through a series of aluminum tubes and fins that make up the heater core, and then leaves via the heater core outlet, flowing back to the pump.

The heater core is just like your engine's radiator except that it releases the heat inside the car instead of outside. A small fan behind the Volkswagen heater core blows air through the fins, transferring the heat to the air, which is then directed inside the cabin through several vents.

There are several ways to control the temperature of the air entering the cabin. One, a valve limits the amount of coolant that flows into the Volkswagen heater core. Two, a door made of synthetic material is installed to block off the heater core. Some cars employ both methods, and in simpler systems, the driver can manually control both the valve and the door. Volkswagens with dual climate control have a split heater core, allowing the driver and the passenger to each select a different temperature.

The car's thermostat keeps the temperature steady when the engine has achieved its optimal operating temperature. When your car overheats, it is advisable that you turn on the Volkswagen heater core to take the load off your car's radiator.
