Volkswagen Head Gasket

Why Deficient Head Gaskets are a No-no to Your Volkswagen

German automaker Volkswagen AG is the world's fourth largest car producer. Seventy years into the company's existence, Volkswagen has acquired itself a cult status. Volkswagen, translated "people's car" in English, is backed by millions of so-called Volkswagenists the world over, a testament to the requited dedication the carmaker has shown through many a Volkswagen model. Known for brand loyalty, these Volkswagen owners claim not to skimp on the maintenance of their car.

Volkswagen maintenance is a given. It does not only preserve the vaunted capabilities of the car, but can also improve car performance. In most cases, car maintenance spells the difference between good and bad cars. One of the more critical maintenance parts of the Volkswagen is the head gasket. Located between the cylinder head and the engine block, the head gasket seals the valve in the cylinders to keep the burn material potent. Since burn material produces greater horsepower when they are kept pressurized, head gasket affects power production.

There are three types of head gaskets. The most widely used type is the MLS or Multiple Layers Steel. It typically consists of three layers of steel and is very durable. Since its solid steel construction retains torque well, MLS head gaskets don't take a compression set like composition gaskets. Another one is the solid copper, which is a solid sheet of paper that requires o-ringing, a process which places a piece of wire around the circumference of the cylinder. And the last one is the composite, which is chiefly made of asbestos or graphite.

On account of the operating conditions that Volkswagen head gasket faces, gasket design is an important consideration. Head gasket must be able to bear the brunt of preignition and overheating. Compression in the cylinder commonly causes a leak in the gasket and blow up the seal. If a Volkswagen incurs a blown head gasket, many problems are likely to occur. Among these are compression loss that can pull down the car's power production. Aside from the decrease on horsepower, a blown head gasket can lead to engine wear and engine overheating, which can greatly contribute to overall engine damage.

Before it leads to worse engine problems, it is advisable to replace your car's defective head gaskets as soon as possible.

Volkswagen Heater Core

Despite advances in fuel combustion technology, your car's engine is still inefficient in converting high-energy fuel into power. During combustion, only 30% of the fuel and air mixture is converted into power, while the rest is given off as heat. To prevent your Volkswagen engine from overheating, a pump flows a coolant mixture into the engine blo...
