Volkswagen Fan Clutch

Uses of the Volkswagen fan clutch

Passenger comfort has advanced to such a state that you sometimes forget that there are thousands of controlled explosions happening under the hood per second every time you drive your Volkswagen. The engine heats up to a degree that a cooling system is needed to cool down the engine and prevent its metal components from melting into a puddle.

The Volkswagen fan clutch is a significant part of this cooling process. It controls the supply of cold fresh air that the engine needs. It ensures that the radiator fan rotates at just the right speed to keep the engine operating in its optimal temperature and turns off the fan when air is not needed.

The Volkswagen fan clutch is fixed to the radiator fan, which is located between the engine and the radiator in most cars. It is an automatic device which consists of a bi-metallic coil sensor and a fluid coupling filled with silicone oil. When the Volkswagen fan clutch senses that the engine temperature is going beyond normal, it engages the radiator fan to keep the engine from overheating.

Just like the car's thermostat, the coil sensor opens up and allows silicone oil to enter the fluid coupling, rotating the fan. However, when the engine's operating temperature is normal and there is ample supply of air coming from the car grills, the Volkswagen fan clutch disengages the radiator fan to save power. The coil sensor compresses and the silicone oil leaves the fluid coupling, slowing down the fan.

The car's radiator will have to work double time if the Volkswagen fan clutch fails. Overheating can occur when the coolant flowing in the radiator is not cooled down properly by the radiator fan. If your air conditioning is acting up, the cause may either be a defective fan or fan clutch because the radiator fan also cools down the air conditioning condenser.
