Volkswagen CV Joint

Well lubricated CV Joints prevent Volkswagen from ticking

The ticking sound you hear on your Volkswagen when you go full throttle is the car’s drive shaft shouting “fire.” Due to the power transfer that the Volkswagen drive shafts accommodate, its network of steel frames and joints are subjected to torsion and shear stress. When you rev up on your Volkswagen, the clutch assembly links the engine to the drive shaft and transfers horsepower in the form of a rotational motion called torque. The more you throttle, the higher the stress in the drive shaft.

While drive shafts are built for durability, they are nonetheless liable to give in to torque. Their weak point is usually the flexible coupling that connects the drive shaft to the wheels. Called constant velocity, or CV, joints, these couplings receives the torque from drive shaft and steer the outer wheel. Compared to other flexible couplings in the drive shaft, CV Joints allow the driven shaft to turn at constant speed regardless of CV Joint angle.

There are two kinds of CV Joints in the Volkswagen drive shaft: inboard and outboard. The outboard Volkswagen CV Joint connects the drive shaft to the wheels, while the inboard CV Joint is fastened to the drive axle. Because it has to keep up with the wheels, the outboard CV Joint has a wider operating angle than the inboard joint. Both types of Volkswagen CV Joints plunge in and out of the drive shaft to accommodate discrepancies in shaft length and that of the axle.

The capacity of the Volkswagen CV Joints to act as a flexible coupling is due to the ball bearings and lubrication on its junctions. And here is where CV Joints usually differ in capabilities and strength. CV Joint, more than anything else, needs maintenance on its lubrication with a special type of high-temperature, high-pressure grease.

Together with the ball bearings, CV Joint lubrication holds the car in curves and over bumps. These lubricated junctions are protected from dirt and gunk buildup by a rubber material called CV Boot. Dirt and road salt can lessen the effects of CV Joint lubrication, which makes CV Boot a maintenance item that must be regularly check. Torsion and shear stress are hard enough for the CV Joint to handle, so it is important that its junctions are well lubricated.

Volkswagen Spoiler

Is your car dragging you down? Want to make use of its (supposed) speed but your car does not to cooperate? Try installing spoilers. Spoilers can make your car aerodynamic by “spoiling” unfavorable wind movement while the car is in motion. Unnecessary wind movements can cause the car to slow down like there is a force dragging it down, causing unp...
