Among the harmful pollutants is carbon monoxide formed during the combustion of gasoline inside the engine, hydrocarbons in the form of unburned gasoline, and nitrogen oxides formed when the heat in the engine forces nitrogen in the air to combine with oxygen.

Inside the Volkswagen Catalytic Converter is the catalyst (in the form of platinum, palladium or rhodium) coated in to the ceramic honeycomb or ceramic beads housed in a muffler-like package attached to the exhaust pipe. It converts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide (which is needed by plants and trees during photosynthesis), hydrocarbons into water and carbon dioxide, and nitrogen back into nitrogen and oxygen. These emissions are mostly benign, though carbon dioxide emissions are believed to contribute to global warming. Since the combustion process is not that perfect, there are still other harmful emissions being produced like bullet carbon monoxide, bullet hydrocarbons or volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) and bullet oxides of nitrogen.

Catalytic Converters like the Volkswagen Catalytic Converters work in three-stages—the reduction catalyst; oxidation catalyst; and the control system. This refers to the three regulated emissions it helps to reduce these harmful pollutants. In the first stage, it makes use of platinum and rhodium to reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions. The second stage (Oxidation Catalyst), there is the reduction of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by burning them over a platinum and palladium catalyst. This catalyst aids the reaction of the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons with remaining oxygen in the exhaust gas. The third stage (Control System) monitors the exhaust stream and utilizes this data to control the fuel injection system.
