Volkswagen Brake Booster

Boosting the Brakes of your Volkswagen

A hundred years ago, when automobiles were still in their infancy, there was ostensibly no way to stop a moving automobile. Then brakes were invented. Brakes are devices that retard the motion of a moving vehicle. Early brake designs were of curved wooden blocks. This was designed to bear against the automobile's steel tires. The design was controlled using a single leverage system from the driver's seat. It was called a "brake shoe" and was the normal way of braking then. It was used to stop either a horse-drawn vehicle or even a steam locomotive. Levers, rods and pivots (from different designs) were used to control them.

By the 20th century's end, the Michelin brothers began a movement that broke away from the normal convention of braking. Automobiles, by then, started to shift to pneumatic rubber wheels, so new ideas concerning braking were needed. Brake shoes were beginning to be obsolete. A new method that attempted to apply the force of friction to the axle or to a drum on the axle or even to the transmission shaft, was used. This Braking System was activated when the driver pushed a pedal down or operated a lever. Continuously applying pressure until it was heavy enough caused the bands to contract more slightly around the drum, giving it more greater retardation.

Past forward to the 21st century. Newer braking systems, which used hydraulic fluids to stop a vehicle became in vogue. One such system used a vacuum. The vacuum became a tool, in which it operated a brake booster. Modern cars, such as your Volkswagen, use this method. The Volkswagen brake booster is one of the most tangible things in your car. You can feel it every time you step on the brake pedal. The Volkswagen brake booster consists of a rubber diaphragm and a valve, which is controlled by the brake pedal. When you step on the brakes, air is allowed into one side of the Volkswagen brake booster. The suction created by the vacuum gives the Volkswagen brake booster the power to press against the master brake cylinder and apply the brakes. This system makes your Volkswagen a safer vehicle than older ones, as the braking is done more efficiently.

Your Volkswagen's brake booster is not infallible, though. A leak may develop in the rubber diaphragm or in the various brake hoses that connect the brake booster to the engine, causing the brake booster to lose the assist. You can feel it when the Volkswagen starts developing a hard brake pedal and stopping distances increase.

Take your Volkswagen to the nearest dealership to have it inspected by their technicians. Not replacing a faulty brake booster can cause serious problems in the long run. The loss of braking power can cause accidents. Even if it is only a minor one, accidents can still happen.
