Volkswagen Belts for Far More Better Ways in Tightening Up

It has been a common saying to “tighten up your belts” whenever a financial problem arises. A financial problem can be brought about by endless bills, possibly including bills in car repair. If you want to avoid these huge car repair bills piling up, it's time you start maintaining your Volkswagen parts properly rather that wait for further and more serious damages. Speaking of belts, your Volkswagen has several belts of its own. These are the drive belt, the timing belt and the seat belts and mind you, these belts need a whole lot of tightening too!

The Volkswagen belt is traditionally called the drive belt. A drive belt is commonly made of high-tensile strength cords and synthetic rubber. Its main function is to connect the engine and provide power to front-mounted accessories like the alternator and the air conditioning compressor, power steering pump the water pump, and the air injection pump. There are basically two types of drive belts. One is called the V-belt. It is called V-belt because of its “V” shaped cross section. The pulleys are gripped by the sides of the belt. The other one is called the serpentine belt which is also known as Poly-V, Poly-Rib, Multi-Rib, and Micro-V belt. The serpentine belt uses multiple V's for more positive contact with the mating pulleys. Nowadays, most vehicles use the serpentine belt.

V-belts should be changed every 36,000 miles. Best slippage is common to V-belts because of glazing caused by the heat from sliding in the pulleys. The glazing often causes a chattering, slapping or squealing noise. Serpentine belts, on the other hand, should be replaced every 50,000 miles. Cracks in the ribbed area are common signs of belt wear or failure. Another belt in your Volkswagen is the timing belt. A timing belt is typically made of rubber with high-tensile fibers running the length of the belt. It main purpose is to control the timing of the engine's valves. A timing belt should be replaced 75,000 miles to every 95,000 miles to prevent further engine damage since symptoms for timing belt failure are not usually that obvious and visible.

The seatbelt is another Volkswagen belt. Seat belts are one of the most effective safety features in a car. In fact, according to a research done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts reduce a person's chances of dying in a crash by 45% and being injured by 50%. Other independent studies have also shown that seat belts also reduce the severity of injury: the odds of serious injury for people not wearing seat belts are four to five times greater than for people who are belted. A typical seatbelt consists of a lap belt, which rests over your pelvis, and a shoulder belt, which extends across your chest. The two belt sections are tightly secured to the frame of the car in order to hold passengers in their seats.

These are the belts in your Volkswagen car. And like other car parts, these deserve proper maintenance to last longer and in order for your car to deliver a much better performance.
