Volkswagen Ball Joints

Getting to know your Volkswagen Ball Joints

Rough and out-of-the way roads can be a challenge to your Volkswagen and how well it handles the ride, while keeping you comfortable inside, depends on the state of your car's steering and suspension system.

Such a system ensures that you have absolute control of your car even when traversing challenging terrain and managing sharp turns. It keeps your Volkswagen drive wheels in firm contact with the road and cushions the passenger cabin from road shock. Thus, the steering and suspension system is more than just a collection of springs, shock absorbers, struts and sway bar. While frequently overlooked, one of the most important parts of the steering and suspension system is the Volkswagen ball joint.

A Volkswagen ball joint is a spherical bearing that allows your wheels to turn when you steer. It is a ball and socket type of device made of hardened steel, which consists of a bearing stud and socket enclosed in a steel housing. The bearing stud narrows down and connects to a hole in the steering knuckle. A high-grade rubber gasket seals off the ball joint to prevent abrasive sand and dirt from damaging and hampering the smooth flow of the components. If your car is using a conventional suspension system, you will usually find an upper and lower Volkswagen ball joint in each wheel. In MacPherson strut suspension systems, only the lower ball joint is used together with the upper strut bearing.

One of the uses of the Volkswagen ball joints is to serve as the pivot point between the tires and the suspension. Since the ball joints are connected to the suspension system, they bear some of the vehicle weight. Their connection to the drive wheels is also sometimes harnessed to set the wheel alignment. Drive wheels showing uneven tire wear is a good indication of a worn Volkswagen ball joint.

Other symptoms also include erratic steering, wandering, and clunking noises when clearing bumps. Always check that the ball joints are lubricated properly to minimize the damage caused by unaided friction.
