Volkswagen Axle

The Volkswagen Axle

What actually makes the wheels of your Volkswagen car rotate is its axle assembly. The axle assembly is a combination of the Volkswagen axle and the constant velocity (CV) joints at both ends of the axle.

Connecting the two opposite wheels together, the Volkswagen axle assembly transmits the torque or rotational force exerted on it by the transmission to the drive wheels. The axles and joints are always lubricated and sealed off from the elements by a rubber gasket to ensure the smooth transfer of rotational force and to enhance driving comfort.

There are different kinds of Volkswagen axles to suit different purposes. The straight axle serves only to connect the two wheels together and doesn't have any driving capability. It is an older type of axle design which is once common in front-wheel drive cars and rear-wheel-drive pick-ups but is rarely being used today. Another type of axle is the drive axle or the live axle.

Unlike the straight axle, it houses the transmission which directly controls the car's gear selection. The most common and complex axle is the transaxle. Containing the differential and the transmission, the transaxle is responsible for both selecting the gear and transferring the torque.

If your Volkswagen car works fine except that it emits grinding noises when accelerating, decelerating, or shifting gears, it is a good bet that you have a damaged Volkswagen axle. Road contaminants like abrasive dirt and dust can easily wear the CV joints so check if the rubber gaskets enclosing the joints are still intact and free of cracks. Repack the wheel bearings of a straight axle every two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. The differential requires constant lubrication so check the lube level of drive axles and transaxles every oil change. It is also a good idea to replace the standard axle lube with a synthetic lube, which doesn't clump in cold weather.

Volkswagen Strut Mount

They wouldn’t call it “negotiating curves” if it were as easy as driving on a straight lane. Among other things, the Volkswagen chassis is subjected to longitudinal compression every time that it hug curves. Supposedly, the car is at risk of rolling sideways when it corners. Resisting the force of this longitudinal compression, the Volkswagen chass...
